Hello!

Empowering youth to celebrate their histories and identities.

Hello! I’m Dr. Amanda Solomon Amorao but my students call me Dr. ASA. I love helping my students explore their own histories, cultures, and identities by making spaces where we can share our stories and build critical connections with each other.

I’m the proud daughter of Filipino immigrants. My family and my community have shaped my passion for teaching and learning. I research and write about Filipinx American culture, decolonizing pedagogies, and women of color feminism.

I currently serve as an Associate Teaching Professor and Director of UC San Diego's Dimensions of Culture Program.

BOOK

Closer to Liberation

My latest book project is an anthology that revisits the roots of Pinayism or Peminism, the specific form of feminist thought and political activism practiced by those who identify as Filipina American or Filipinx American. My co-editors Dr. DJ Kuttin Kandi, Jen Soriano and I hope this volume speaks to this current generation of Pinays and Pinxys developing their activist practices so that we can all come closer to liberation.

This book is such a gift.

Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales

Confronting the pain and promise of home in order to create anew is the beginning of our first Pin[a/x]yist pathway toward liberation.

Perhaps we can find bahay (home) when we find bayanihan (the spirit of community).

Together, on this path, we can honor our individual journey as we also unpack what it means to truly be in community, what it means to do more than just unify but rather to build a collective home.

Work with me

  • Speaking Engagements

I design and teach courses that explore social difference, personal identity, movements for justice, and the power of culture for social change. I am especially dedicated to helping youth develop a more profound comprehension of these important subjects.

  • Workshops

As a sought-after speaker, I love engaging with any groups or individuals who share my commitment to exploring the complexities of social hierarchies, coalition building, and movements for change.

  • Courses

I help students develop critical reading and writing skills by exploring issues of diversity, justice, and social change. My goal is to co-create a classroom environment where we can learn from one another to impact our communities.

Kind words

  • Joanmarie Banez in front of a yellow background

Dr. Solomon is the first Pinay professor I’ve ever had, a Filipino-American woman who moreover completed her PhD in the same program I’m currently in. Through our shared positionalities, Dr. Solomon has served as an invaluable mentor, extending her compassion and resourcefulness to guide me throughout my time at and beyond UCSD.

  • Aimee Jurado in front of a yellow background

Being a Filipina, first-generation graduate student, it has meant so much to have a mentor who understands the nuanced obstacles I have and will face in academia. Where critical texts theorize what it means to center anti- capitalism and decolonization in our work, it is through Dr. Solomon that I see this happen in tangible, thought-provoking ways, from the content she produces to the ways in which they are produced.

Reflections

As a Pinay scholar, educator, and leader, I’m constantly reflecting on my experiences of teaching, mothering, and developing my Pinayist praxis. I'm excited to share my thoughts and insights with you and hope they might be helpful to you as you as you navigate your own educational journey, deepen your own political consciousness, or explore your own personal identity further.
